Encaustic

Encaustic paint is made from beeswax and resin and artists pigments. It is heated to ~85C and is applied while in a molten state. After each application the paint is fused into the previous layer with a torch or heat gun.

Encaustic paintings have one of the best track records for longevity, with existing paintings dating back to the 5th century BC. The nature of the wax and resin make the art impervious to moisture. Care should be taken to avoid scratching the surface or bumping the edges. They require little care other than protection from extreme temperatures. Avoid freezing and extremely hot temperatures; wax will melt at 150°F / 65°C. Do not leave encaustic art in a hot car and if exposed to extreme cold be aware that the wax can become brittle when handled.
